Addiction - What to do about that employee or friend who displays signs of
trouble with alcohol, drugs and/or gambling

Alcohol or drug addiction extracts a tremendous cost on society estimated at $25 billion annually in lost time, accidents and increased insurance costs. Everyone knows someone with an addiction either in your firm or in your family. Addiction effects one of every 6 workers.

It is a tremendous drain and so many do not get the proper treatment or counselling and are lost to society.

This session is an educational seminar on how to help those in need of assistance for the company’s well-being as well as their own.

Our guest speaker Patrick Delahunty of Revitalize Lives Inc. is a certified addiction counsellor and has worked with construction employers and families.

Patrick will speak on his experience and the various services available in assisting employers to effectively deal with an alcoholic or addict employee.

CPR C "Basic Rescuer" and Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
Certification

The OCA is now offering a 4 hour course that teaches participants how to administer CPR to adults, children and infants.

The City of Ottawa has equipped over 400 Ottawa public access establishments such as community centres, arenas and public pools with AEDs.  The number of public and private business implementing AED protocols in the workplace has been increasing in Ontario, since 2001.

CPR/AED course content includes:  -  Scene Management and Primary Assessment, Anatomy and Physiology  - Adult, Child and Infant CPR, Choking Procedures, Cardiovascular Emergencies – (heart attack, angina, stroke and transient ischemic attack, cardiac arrest)  -  Shock

This course offers annual certification for the use of an AED.  An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is a lifesaving device that automatically analyzes heart rhythms and advises the operator to deliver the appropriate treatment.  CPR can help circulate oxygen and stimulate the electric current of the heart, known as ventricular fibrillation, an otherwise fatal rhythm.  The chain of survival indicates that for every minute a person is in cardiac arrest, their chances of survival decreases approximately 10% per minute.  Simply, CPR can sustain the life, while AED can save a life.

This course also covers: Annual Re-certification requirements for ALL levels of CPR and AED protocols in the workplace or public sectors.

This is an approved course by the Ontario WSIB and Health Canada and meets the standards required by the construction industry.

Managing the Workplace for Compliance - Ontario Regulation 429/07
Accessibility Standard for Customer Service

IS YOUR ORGANIZATION COMPLIANT?

The Accessibility Standard for Customer Service is a regulation under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act, 2005 (AODA).

Compliance came into effect January 1st, 2012 and will affect virtually all business sectors including Construction.

The regulation requires public and private sector organizations to comply with mandatory standards that remove and prevent barriers to accessibility for people with disabilities.

This regulation is not about installing ramps and power doors to access your premise, rather the regulations deal with how to better assist persons with a disability on accessing your services and / or products. This means developing policy and procedures as required by this regulation and training front line staff on the accessibility plan.

In this seminar you will learn how this regulation affects your organization, and what steps you need to take. We will also provide to participants the necessary tools and resources to get your organization started.

If your organization has more than two employees, we strongly encourage you to attend to learn more and take the necessary action to ensure compliance.

Whether you are just starting out, or have been in the industry for years, the information presented in this course will help you to understand what you can do to keep yourself, your co-workers, and the environment you work in safe every day.

 Description:

You know that construction can be a dangerous industry to work in.  You work with tools, equipment and vehicles that require special training and consideration, and you work in environments that call for tradespeople to be constantly aware of the potential hazards to your health and safety.

This construction Safety Awareness course was developed by the construction industry as a national course to give you an overview and encourage a general awareness of the health and safety issues you’ll be faced with on any worksite in Canada.

This course is intended for everyone working in construction in any part of the country, in any sector (residential, industrial, commercial, institutional, pipeline, civil).

OCA Safety Network Meeting - Ministry of Labour Access Equipment Campaign

The Ministry of Labour is launching a campaign for August targeting access equipment which includes ladders, suspended stages and elevated work platforms.

A similar campaign was conducted from May 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010 with 2,151 visits to 1,745 workplaces resulting in 6,266 orders including 397 stop-work orders related to ladder use. Orders were issued in regards to ladder use, guardrails, fall protection and training. A total of 7% of the orders were issued in respect of ladders.

From January 2009 to March 2010 inclusive, one fatality was attributed to ladder use. During the same time period, unsafe ladder use contributed to 38 critical injuries. Most of these injuries occurred in the low-rise residential construction sector and included falls from ladders as well as electrical contact.

Of particular interest to contractors is the fact that the Ministry of Labour is presently attempting to gain acceptance with the Provincial Labour-Management H & S Advisory Committee on a MoL policy respecting the use of ladders other than as a means of access.

The MoL since 2009 had been using a guideline that they would allow ‘short duration’ work from ladders – at less than 30 minutes at one time. Workers may work from a adder multiple times throughout the day, as long as there is an adequate rest period or alternative work in between.

This may change in the coming month. To learn the latest on this topic, come listen to:
